Hometown Wanderlust: Deano’s Italian

By August 9, 2016October 11th, 2017No Comments

Hometown Wanderlust is an adventurous, weekly blog featuring one girl’s experiences with food, music, shopping, history, art and life in general around Dublin GA. This week, Dublin GA’s favorite redhead looks back on a particular memory made at Deano’s Italian.

More times than not my fondest memories somehow include food. Whether it’s memories made at a favorite local establishment, laughing and cutting up over the stove at home or sitting on the counter at a friend’s providing the entertainment while they slave away, there almost always guaranteed to be a delicious meal included with any gathering.

Stumped

All weekend I was trying to think of what to write my blog on today and couldn’t come up with anything…until that moment happened in the middle of the night; that moment when you suddenly have a great idea and you hope 1. it’s still a great idea when you wake up and 2. hope you can actually remember said idea! I have remembered in my dream state that I am coming up on my one-year work anniversary! My thoughts lead to thinking about those first few days, being completely frightened by the new experiences and challenges. I didn’t know what to expect in the coming weeks and months…

First Day

We went to lunch together that first day of work, Deano’s Italian. Bundle of nerves or not lunch at a favorite, familiar spot is bound to shake any apprehensive feelings. I’ve been to Deano’s many times in the past, lunch with the mini-me, dinner with the girls and definite go to for dinner with out-of-town friends. Always comfortable AND delicious. Obviously so, being voted best pizza in Georgia and 100 Plates Locals Love. There’s something about the beautiful, rustic wooden floors and craggy brick walls. Featuring a wood-fire oven imported from Italy providing the establishment that extra warmth, not necessarily heat but feeling. A certain coziness. On this day that familiarity helped extraordinarily, the comfort of a delicious lunch and familiar faces as the waitstaff passing by always stop to say hello.

Grace

Probably one of the defining moments when my guard completely fell was when Bossie encouraged us to take photographs of our exquisite entrees at that first lunch. Such a simple thing but I’m a foodie. I love beautiful food, delicious food. I love sharing such experiences. Laughs, plenty of laughs. Silliness. Hard work. From that time I knew I was gonna fit right in.

Now a year later I am baffled to look back and know I was even remotely anxious. I’ve experienced things I never thought I would, been places and conquered fears. We’ve shared several meals now, as a work family over those tables. I look forward to many more.
