April 18, 2017  Dublin, GA

On April 17th, Dublin revealed her new Martin Luther King, Jr. Monument Park in downtown. Located at the intersection of US Hwy. 441 and Church Street, the new park marks Dublin as the place where a fifteen year old Martin Luther King, Jr. gave his first public speech in 1944.

At the close of the reveal, Visit Dublin GA discussed the project’s next steps, and issued a call to the Dublin community’s leaders. Dubbed the 5 for 5 Challenge, Dublin company YKK AP America, manufacturer of commercial facades and residential windows and doors, was the first to sign onto this challenge with a $5,000 donation and a pledge, that if three more companies commit by Memorial Day, YKK AP America will fund the final, additional $5,000 to realize the project.

“The Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Park is a true representation of the city of Dublin and its great history,” said Oliver Stepe, president of YKK AP America. “As a longstanding member of the community, YKK AP could not be more proud to be a part of the 5 for 5 Challenge, and to play a small role in helping to bring this honorable project to its final completion.”

Curry Companies Joins 5 For 5 Challenge

Immediately following issuance of the 5 For 5 Challenge, local family owned real estate company, Curry Companies jumped at the opportunity to pledge of donation of $5,000.

“Downtown Dublin is experiencing a fabulous rebirth,” Chairman and CEO, Louie Curry, Jr. said. “Having the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Park as the gateway to our downtown is very fitting tribute to Dr. King. Our downtown is the heart and soul of our community and Dr. King was the heart and soul of the Civil Rights Movement. Curry Companies is glad to be able to be a partner in the final phase of this project. We applaud YKK AP for taking the lead and making this challenge and to Visit Dublin GA, the Downtown Development Authority, the City of Dublin, the Laurens County Commission and numerous businesses for working together to make Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Park a reality. Our community is well known for being able to come together, this is another great example.”

The 5 for 5 Challenge will fund the installation of a podium sculpture by Dublin artist, Juan Lleras, on the grounds of First African Baptist Church along with additional lighting and landscaping.
