Hometown Wanderlust: Splash Pad
Hometown Wanderlust is a brand new, adventurous, weekly blog featuring one girl’s experiences with food, music, shopping, biking and life in general around Dublin GA. This week, Dublin GA’s favorite redhead discovers the Southern Pines Splash Pad.
Season
Spring sneaks away quietly. You don’t notice it at first, one day just leads into the next longer, hotter than the one before. Bright colorful flowers gradually fade away leaving full foliaged trees and bushes. Stifling waves of heat float and swirl along with intermittent breezes whispering of a season just slipping away. Almost anywhere you go children’s voices ringing break the silence or chime in with adults.
Summer Break
Mini-me is out of school. Every parent knows the frantic struggle of wanting to make sure the little ones have fun. Aren’t bored. Continue learning. Social interaction. A memorable summer. Don’t break the bank. There’s no time.
I have the day off. We throw on swimsuits, pack a few snacks, water and head out. I love surprises, of course I don’t tell her what we’re gonna do. The anticipation is half the fun, for me! The splash pad is only a few minutes from our house. When we arrive there’s already a handful of parents and babysitters lounging along the sides of the pad their small ones, splashing and squealing in the streams and puddles.
I get left almost immediately to set up our little spot on my own.
Sitting back soaking in the almost summer sun I watch the kids interacting. Chasing, hiding, showing how to properly shoot streams of water at the random passing adult. Together counting down time until the giant bucket tips and drenches the tiny little people huddled under it, screeching in complete surprise every single time. Strangers to one another yet bonding over one simple task: having a good time.
There’s no measure of time or no amount of money that can produce the simple moments that a child can create. What keeps us from doing the same.
