Dublin Completes First Phase of Walking Trail near Oconee Fall Line Technical College
Friday, January 29th, 2021 Dublin, Georgia: The City of Dublin, Visit Dublin GA, Laurens County and Oconee Fall Line Technical College (OFTC) have completed phase one of a trail creating pedestrian and bicycle access from OFTC’s DuBose Porter Conference Center to Travel Center Boulevard in Dublin, Georgia. Dublin’s Travel Center Boulevard is located off exit 51 on I-16, which features national brands like Hampton Inn, La Quinta, and Fairfield by Marriott, as well as Longhorn, Waffle House, Cracker Barrel, Zaxby’s, Friendly Gus, and Dublin’s Regional Visitors Information Center.
This scenic 1/10 mile walking trail connecting OFTC to Travel Center Boulevard will provide easy direct access for tourists, students, and conference attendees going between the campus to lodging and dining options as well as Dublin’s Visitors Center. The trail also provides a natural space for leisure walking and jogging, with many species of Laurens County’s native flora naturally occurring in the area. For convenience, parking is available at each head of the trail via a parking lot on the OFTC property and a cul de sac at the end of Travel Center Boulevard.
As a result of beginning construction on the connecting trail in 2020, Visit Dublin GA was able to win contracts to host several large upcoming conventions to be held at OFTC’s DuBose Porter Conference Center. The completion of a connecting trail has been vital to each conference meeting planner, to provide walkability for attendees traveling between the conference center to lodging and dining destinations.
“This walking trail was the brainchild of Janet R. Smith, Director, Student Life/Special Populations at OFTC who connected us with Katie Davis, Vice President for Facilities, Planning, and Research. Thanks to OFTC, Lance Jones, Dublin City Manager, the City of Dublin’s Engineering and Public Works departments, and many other private individuals and public servants, we have connected not only buildings, but we will use this trail to connect people,” said Miriam Ponton, Assistant Director, Visit Dublin GA. “Very soon, the City will complete connecting the trail directly to OFTC’s parking lot with a ramp.”
Additional phases will connect the hotels directly to the trail, add signage identifying natural flora, and other amenities such as lighting, waste receptacles and more.
